11 June 2014 / Biz Journal – Atlanta metal band Mastodon will be the first major label group to accept the digital currency bitcoin through a partnership with BitPay.
“Having a major label artist embrace bitcoin is a definite sign of bitcoin’s growth and expansion into the world of music,” said Tony Gallippi, BitPay executive chairman and co-founder, in a statement.
Warner Bros. Records Inc.’s Mastodon has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. In 2007, the band’s “Colony of Birchmen” was nominated for Best Metal Performance and in 2012 the band’s “Curl of the Burl” was nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
“We’re excited to work with fellow Atlanta-natives BitPay for our new album,” Mastodon said in a statement. “We want to give our fans as many options to buy our new album as possible, and are happy that bitcoin can be one of those choices.”
